On Monday at 10 am, mobile phones across the Barcelona area rang during an emergency alert drill. This test was part of the ES-Alert system, which warns the public about emergencies like flooding or wildfires.
The alarm reached approximately 5 million people across the counties of Baix Llobregat, Barcelonès, Maresme, Vallès Occidental, and Vallès Oriental. It was the largest emergency alert drill ever conducted in Catalonia.
Interior Minister Núria Parlon called the drill "positive," highlighting that surveys of 600 residents showed 95% received the alert correctly.
She emphasized the system's "very high" coverage and stressed the importance of such drills in helping to strengthen a culture of self-protection.
During the test, users experienced a loud sound and phone vibration.
The alert message stated: "Civil Protection alert test of the Catalan government. In a real emergency, you would receive instructions to protect yourself."
This large-scale emergency alert test in Barcelona demonstrated effective communication, reinforcing public safety awareness and self-protection measures.
