Key players out as New Zealand reveal squad for West Indies

New Zealand will refine their preparations for next year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka by hosting a five-match T20I series against the West Indies. Several key players are unavailable due to injuries as the team named its 14-player squad.

Injuries and absences

Former captain Kane Williamson is also absent following his recent retirement from T20 internationals. All-rounder Mitchell Santner will once again lead the side.

New faces and returning players

Fast bowler Kyle Jamieson and spinner Ish Sodhi are among those returning to the squad. Uncapped seamer Nathan Smith has earned a call-up and could make his T20I debut, while Matt Henry misses out as he focuses on the upcoming ODI and Test series against the same opponents.

Coach’s view

“It’s great to have five opportunities to take on a dangerous side like the West Indies,” said coach Rob Walter.

The opening match of the series will take place in Auckland on Wednesday, marking New Zealand’s final T20I series before the World Cup.
