Russia carried out new overnight drone strikes on the northern Ukrainian city of Sumy near the Russian border, leaving at least 11 people injured, including four children, according to local authorities early Friday.
Ukraine’s emergency service reported that a nine-story residential building was hit, igniting fires in five apartments and seven balconies. Twelve residents were evacuated. The attacks also caused damage to several private facilities, and the worst destruction occurred at an unidentified infrastructure site where large fires were later brought under control.
Oleg Hryhorov, head of the Sumy regional military administration, stated that the strikes damaged a railway passenger depot, with utility buildings and railcars destroyed. Shortly after, Sumy regional police reported that 15 people were injured in the attacks.
The assaults on Sumy were part of a broader Russian campaign of drone and missile strikes across Ukraine on Thursday. Officials said Russian attacks killed seven people in the Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Vinnytsia regions.
Ukraine’s largest private energy supplier, DTEK, confirmed that missile and drone strikes on its thermal power plants caused fires and equipment damage.
“We’re still assessing the damage, but without question this attack is a bad blow in our efforts to keep power flowing this winter,”
said Maxim Timchenko, CEO of DTEK, on X.
Russia’s overnight drone strikes on Sumy injured at least 11 people, hit residential and industrial sites, and added pressure to Ukraine’s energy system amid winter challenges.
