The NHS has issued an urgent call for flu vaccinations, with England’s top nurse urging people to get protected immediately. There are just weeks left before the peak of the flu season, which usually strikes hard during winter.
Adults eligible for the flu vaccine are encouraged to come forward now to ensure full protection ahead of the typical winter surge. To meet demand, the NHS is offering 2.4 million vaccination appointments next week — enough to cover the entire populations of Greater Manchester or Botswana.
The NHS is responding to an unusually early wave of flu cases, which started more than a month earlier than usual. Current flu infections are three times higher than the same period last year.
This follows Australia's worst flu season on record, a reliable indicator for what might be expected in England.
According to the latest weekly figures, NHS teams have administered over 13 million flu vaccines since the campaign began:
“Eligible adults are being urged to get their jab as soon as possible to stamp out the early wave of flu hitting the NHS more than a month earlier this year,” NHS England stated.
