This Ryder Cup Legend Rules Himself Out as Europe’s Next Captain—for Now

Justin Rose’s management team has informed Today’s Golfer that the Englishman plans to focus on playing in one more Ryder Cup before considering a captaincy role. The race to be Europe’s next Ryder Cup captain now appears to be down to two candidates.

Back in July at the Genesis Scottish Open, Rose expressed his eagerness to lead the European team at Adare Manor in 2027, saying he would “give everything” to the responsibility once his time comes.

However, Rose’s recent success at the FedEx St Jude Championship, the first event of the PGA Tour’s three-playoff series, earned him an automatic spot on Luke Donald’s team at Bethpage. With his Ryder Cup points total rising to 17.5 and an entry into the all-time top 10, his experience in New York has fueled his desire to compete again.

The Telegraph’s James Corrigan reported that sources close to Rose have confirmed his wish to represent Europe for an eighth Ryder Cup. Today’s Golfer reached out to Rose’s team, who confirmed:

“He does want to play in another one,”

but currently, Rose has not engaged in any discussions with Ryder Cup Europe’s decision-makers, choosing instead to enjoy downtime after playing 20 events over eight months.

Rose also clearly stated in an interview at Renaissance that a player-captain role is not something he seeks:

“I’m not sure that’s a role we should be entertaining really.”

Summary

Justin Rose aims to compete in one more Ryder Cup before pursuing a captaincy, reaffirming his focus on playing rather than transitioning into leadership immediately.
