Underworld Kingpin Mokbel Avoids Return to Prison

Drug kingpin Tony Mokbel has been sentenced to time already served after losing an attempt to have one of his convictions overturned. Mokbel will not serve additional prison time for trafficking 41 kg of methamphetamine while on the run.

At 60 years old, Mokbel showed visible relief and shared a passionate kiss with his girlfriend after the Victorian Court of Appeal delivered its decision on Thursday.

Legal Proceedings and Conviction

Mokbel initially sought to quash his 2006 conviction, alleging that barrister-turned-informer Nicola Gobbo compromised his case. However, in October, the court rejected his appeal concerning the drug-trafficking charge linked to the operation named Magnum.

The court upheld his conviction and re-sentenced him to 13 years, seven months, and 15 days, a sentence he has already served.

Justice McLeish noted, "While the offending was serious and flagrant, Mokbel's unusual circumstances warranted the more modest sentence."

Arrest and Appeals

Mokbel was arrested and extradited to Melbourne in 2008. He pleaded guilty in 2011 to the Magnum offense and two additional drug charges.

Earlier in 2025, he successfully appealed two of these convictions, known as Quills and Orbital.

Summary: Tony Mokbel’s lengthy drug trafficking conviction is upheld, but he will not serve further time after the court re-sentenced him to the period he has already served.
