The Los Angeles Lakers have started the 2025-26 season strong with a 6-2 record, led by Luka Dončić, a five-time All-NBA First Team selection, and likely All-Star Austin Reaves. However, their 21-time All-Star and four-time NBA champion LeBron James has yet to debut due to a severe preseason sciatica diagnosis.
At 40 years old and entering his 23rd NBA season, James seems to be making encouraging progress toward returning to play.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, James has been training individually and is expected to advance to 5-on-5 live scrimmages soon.
"LeBron James has been working out individually, and I'm told the next step for him is 5-on-5, live play," Charania stated on ESPN's NBA Countdown with Malika Andrews.
The Lakers' staff remain optimistic about a mid-November return, though acknowledge this situation is unprecedented given James’ age and longevity in the league.
"I was told today that Lakers personnel are still operating under the belief that LeBron James' debut will be around mid-November, but this is uncharted territory," Charania added.
"He's in his 23rd NBA season and that's why Rob Pelinka's three signings this offseason have been so important, paying dividends with the depth without one of the best players of all time in LeBron James."
LeBron James is making good progress recovering from sciatica and may return to play in mid-November, with the Lakers' strong roster depth helping the team in his absence.
