Victoria's highest court has ruled that Tony Mokbel will not face additional prison time related to a methamphetamine trafficking operation.
The Court of Appeal re-sentenced Mokbel to time already served after some of his convictions were overturned due to the fallout from the Lawyer X scandal.
Originally sentenced in 2012 to 30 years in prison, Mokbel’s penalty included a 20-year term for running the drug operation known as "Magnum" between 2006 and 2007 while evading Australian police in Greece.
Today, the court reduced the "Magnum" sentence to time served, recognizing Mokbel is no longer classified as a "serious drug offender."
At the conclusion of Thursday’s hearing, Mokbel kissed his partner and left without speaking to the media.
Mokbel remains on bail and faces another court appearance later this month over a separate drug case.
"Victoria's highest court has ruled Tony Mokbel is no longer a 'serious drug offender' and will not force the underworld figure back to prison over a methamphetamine trafficking racket."
After more than 6,500 days in custody, this decision marks another key legal victory bringing Mokbel closer to eventual freedom.
This ruling significantly reduces Tony Mokbel’s prison time by overturning part of his sentence and acknowledges his changed offender status amid ongoing legal proceedings.
