Richard Jefferson emphasized how Kyrie Irving’s return could transform the Dallas Mavericks’ season, particularly benefiting rookie Cooper Flagg.
The Mavericks’ 2025–26 campaign has started rough, with the team holding a 2–5 record, the second-worst in the Western Conference. Despite selecting top pick Cooper Flagg, his early performances haven’t translated into wins.
According to Jefferson, the slow start isn’t surprising since the Mavericks opened the season without Irving, who continues to rehab from an ACL injury sustained last year. His absence has left a significant void at the point guard spot.
“Everyone knew this would be a somewhat difficult start to the season for the Mavericks,” Jefferson said. “Once Kyrie returns, we’ll see a very different Cooper Flagg.”
Many assumed the team had signed D’Angelo Russell as a temporary solution, but Dallas opted to trust Flagg with organizing the offense. Although he possesses remarkable potential, he’s still learning to adapt to the NBA level.
Flagg currently averages 13.6 points and 6.3 rebounds on 38.8% shooting. Jefferson believes those numbers will rise once Irving reclaims his playmaking duties, easing Flagg’s adjustment period.
Jefferson predicts Kyrie Irving’s comeback will spark Cooper Flagg’s growth and help stabilize the Mavericks after a disappointing start to the season.
