San Jose Sharks forward William Eklund will not play in Wednesday's game against the Seattle Kraken at Climate Pledge Arena. This marks his second consecutive absence due to a lower-body injury.
Eklund, tied for second on the Sharks with 11 points this season, did not travel with the team to Seattle on Tuesday. He originally missed Sunday’s 3-2 shootout loss to the Detroit Red Wings because of the injury.
Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky described Eklund as "day-to-day" and noted the player is "trending in the right direction," though it remains uncertain if Eklund will be placed on injured reserve. The Sharks have games against the Winnipeg Jets on Friday and the Florida Panthers on Saturday coming up.
At 23 years old, Eklund has been showing some of the best play of his NHL career. Between October 23 and 30, he recorded four goals and five assists. Alongside Alexander Wennberg and Philipp Kurashev, Eklund formed the Sharks' most reliable line, excelling in scoring and defensive responsibilities.
"Eklund, Alexander Wennberg, and winger Philipp Kurashev formed the Sharks’ most consistent line, not only with their scoring contributions but by holding the opposing teams’ top lines mostly in check."
Eklund played nearly 21 minutes in ice time during the Sharks' 3-2 overtime victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday.
Author's summary: William Eklund’s absence due to injury challenges the Sharks as they aim to extend their point streak against top Pacific Division rivals.
