David Lammy forgets Remembrance symbol while filling in for Starmer
While standing in for Keir Starmer during Prime Minister’s Questions, Justice Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy began the session with a respectful tribute to those who had fought to defend freedom. However, he appeared to forget a key symbol of remembrance—the poppy.
Amid the proceedings, observers noted that Lammy was not wearing a poppy, unlike most MPs. Around fifteen minutes later, Cabinet colleague Bridget Phillipson discreetly handed him one to correct the oversight.
“I bought a new suit this morning because my Godmother said she would be watching,”
Lammy explained to the Commons. He then thanked Phillipson
“for ensuring that despite wearing a new suit I have managed to put my poppy on.”
Conservative Party chairman Kevin Hollinrake criticised the lapse, calling it “a disgrace” that Lammy represented Sir Keir Starmer at the session without the commemorative emblem.
