‘Weather Bomb’ to Impact Newfoundland and Labrador
Special weather statements and warnings are issued for most of Newfoundland and coastal Labrador as a powerful storm approaches. CBC meteorologist Ashley Brauweiler is monitoring a so-called "weather bomb" expected to hit parts of the region on Tuesday.
Storm Warnings and Wind Gusts
- Environment Canada has issued alerts for the Avalon and Burin peninsulas, most of the island, and coastal Labrador.
- The strongest winds are anticipated starting Tuesday afternoon, with a wind warning in effect until Wednesday night.
- Winds may reach gusts up to 110 km/h on Tuesday and remain above 100 km/h into Tuesday night.
This is going to be an incredibly strong northeaster,” said Brauweiler.
Rainfall and Coastal Flooding Risks
Significant rainfall is expected across the island starting Tuesday morning, with some areas forecast to receive between 50 mm and 70 mm of rain.
Environment Canada warns of possible coastal flooding and wave heights ranging from six to nine metres, particularly threatening the south coast if waters rise above high tide.
Storm Duration and Labrador Impact
- The storm system is expected to weaken by Wednesday night or Thursday morning.
- Coastal Labrador will experience this system beginning Tuesday night, potentially lasting until Friday.
- Rainfall in Labrador may total 50 mm over 24 hours, with inland areas potentially seeing snow.
- Winds there could reach up to 100 km/h, with warnings for coastal flooding due to storm surge and large waves.
Summary: A powerful northeasterly storm will bring heavy wind, rain, and possible coastal flooding to Newfoundland and Labrador from Tuesday into the week, gradually easing by Thursday.
