Conservative Alberta MP Matt Jeneroux has announced his resignation from the House of Commons following days of speculation about a potential switch to the governing Liberals. The decision comes amid efforts by the party to quell unrest during a turbulent week.
In a letter obtained by the National Post, Jeneroux informed Conservative Party Whip Chris Warkentin on Thursday about his plan to resign at an unspecified date. He wrote,
“It was not an easy decision, but it is, I believe, the right one.”
The Edmonton Riverbend MP, first elected in 2015, did not elaborate on the reasons behind his sudden resignation.
Though barely mentioning party leader Pierre Poilievre, Jeneroux expressed respect for “the many remarkable individuals” across both sides of the House of Commons. His departure marks the second dramatic exit of a Conservative MP in just three days, posing a challenge for Poilievre ahead of the leadership review scheduled for January.
