Edgar Wright Reveals The Running Man's Secret Brolin Family Easter Egg With A Much Deeper Meaning

Edgar Wright Reveals The Running Man's Hidden Brolin Family Easter Egg

Director Edgar Wright has disclosed a surprising Easter egg in his new adaptation of The Running Man, connecting two generations of the Brolin family. The director confirmed that not only does Josh Brolin appear as the film’s antagonist, Dan Killian, but his father, James Brolin, also makes an unexpected cameo.

“Josh Brolin is not the only Brolin in this movie. By complete coincidence, his dad is in it as well,” Wright explained in an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan.

Wright revealed that James Brolin’s appearance came about unintentionally. A clip from James’s older action thriller, Skyjacked, featuring him as a hijacker, was included in the movie long before Josh was cast. The connection between the father and son only became clear later in production, creating a deeper, symbolic layer to the film’s narrative.

“We wrote that in. We got the clip cleared — and this was all before Josh Brolin was cast as Killian. And then when Josh Brolin was cast, I suddenly said to him, ‘Hey, your dad’s in the movie too.’”
