Joji has dropped the third single from his upcoming album Piss In the Wind, which is set for release on February 6. Earlier this week, the Japanese-Australian artist unveiled the track “If It Only Gets Better,” but he quickly followed it up with the melancholic piano ballad “Past Won’t Leave My Bed.”
Written in collaboration with Jonathan Xavier Cunningham, fussy, P.J.A. Williams, and producer Dan Farber, the song captures Joji’s struggle to move on from a lost relationship. The track opens with him haunted by visions of his ex, finding brief peace only in sleep—which soon fades.
In the chorus, gentle guitars and piano chords emphasize his inner turmoil. As the second verse unfolds, Joji admits that his attempts to calm himself no longer work, as memories of the past keep returning.
Genius user @Hey_Its_Ion noted that Joji’s reference to lullabies echoes his 2020 track “Like You Do,” where he sings, “If you ever go, all the songs that we like / Will sound like bittersweet lullabies.”
The video for “Past Won’t Leave My Bed” shows Joji attempting to escape his pain by hitchhiking across the country and getting involved in reckless adventures with suspicious strangers.
Author’s summary: Joji’s new single depicts a haunting emotional journey through heartbreak, blending sorrowful piano tones with raw vulnerability in his signature reflective style.
