Zarine Khan, wife of actor and filmmaker Sanjay Khan, passed away on Friday at the age of 81. The couple shared nearly six decades together, raising their four children — Simone, Farah, Sussanne, and Zayed Khan. Their marriage, like many long relationships, experienced both joy and challenges.
Their story began when Sanjay first saw Zarine in Juhu, Mumbai. He was 18, and she was just 13. The young connection left a lasting impression on him and set the foundation for their enduring bond.
“We gazed into each other’s eyes and in that moment, I knew hers were the eyes of someone I wanted to spend the rest of my life with.”
According to Sanjay’s memoir, The Best Mistakes of My Life, he asked her to marry him soon after their first meeting. Zarine replied calmly that she would agree if she felt the same way a year later. Sanjay admired her maturity despite her young age, and she soon became his closest confidante. The couple remained together for six years before marrying.
After Sanjay rose to stardom in the 1960s, rumours of his affair with actress Zeenat Aman caused a difficult phase in their marriage. Despite this, Zarine stood by him and chose to maintain her commitment. She also gave up her modelling career when Sanjay issued an ultimatum before their marriage.
Through turbulence and time, Zarine and Sanjay Khan stayed together until her passing, their bond surviving the trials of fame and personal struggles.
Zarine Khan’s life reflected enduring love and resilience, as she left her career and stood unwavering beside Sanjay Khan through fame, controversy, and lifelong companionship.
