James Overy, a promising Manchester United Academy defender, has earned his first senior international selection with Australia for the November fixtures. The 17-year-old’s call-up marks a major milestone after an impressive few months.
Following his return from the U20 World Cup in Chile, Overy has been training with United’s first team. This period allowed him to gain experience under coach Ruben Amorim and play alongside senior figures such as Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw.
Although his debut for the United senior side is yet to come, Amorim has already shown faith in youth by granting debuts to three academy players last season. Reports indicate that Overy’s work ethic and technical skills have impressed the senior coaching staff.
Overy’s rapid rise continues as he transitions from being the youngest member of Australia’s U20 squad to joining the senior team. National team manager Tony Popovic included him among 11 changes to the squad, signaling a fresh wave of young talent for Australia.
Popovic has confirmed that six uncapped players, including Overy, are available for selection in the upcoming friendlies. Australia will face Venezuela in Houston on 14 November, followed by a match against Colombia in New York.
"Tony Popovic has opened the door for the United youngster to make his senior debut in one of the two upcoming friendly matches later this month."
James Overy’s first senior call-up crowns a breakthrough period for the 17-year-old, reflecting his rapid progress from youth hopeful to international prospect.
