Man Utd Starlet Called Up to Australia's Senior Team

Manchester United youth player James Overy has earned a call-up to the Australia national team for this month's friendlies against Venezuela and Colombia. Socceroos manager Tony Popovic has introduced 11 new faces to the squad, with Overy among the rising talents ready to build on his impressive performances at the U20 World Cup.

Overy's Journey at Manchester United

Turning 18 this weekend, Overy joined Manchester United in summer 2024 on a scholarship and signed a professional contract in July. Shortly after his arrival, coach Ruben Amorim integrated him and other youngsters into first-team training ahead of a Premier League match against Chelsea.

Overy faced a significant setback with an eight-month injury absence but returned to action with the Under-18s in February, according to the Manchester Evening News. Since then, he has been a regular in Darren Fletcher's Under-18 squad and has featured for the Under-21s in Premier League 2 and the National League Cup.

Coaches Praise Overy's Resilience

“It’s been really hard for James because obviously he’s made the move from Australia and he’s a terrific lad, first of all,” said former Under-18s manager Adam Lawrence on MUTV.

Lawrence highlighted Overy's strong character in overcoming his long injury and adapting to life and football in a new country.

Squad Changes for Australia's Friendlies

James Overy's rapid progression reflects both his personal resilience and the confidence placed in him by Manchester United and the Australia national team.
