Buffalo Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin has taken a leave of absence to return to Sweden for personal reasons. The team confirmed that he has their complete support during this time.
“I will say this: he said everything is OK,” coach Lindy Ruff stated on Friday. “He’s got full support by our team.”
There is currently no set timetable for the defenseman’s return. Dahlin previously revealed that his fiancée, Carolina Matovac, underwent a lifesaving heart transplant over the summer. She fell ill during a vacation in France, where her heart failed, requiring CPR multiple times and extended life support before receiving a new heart.
Matovac is now recovering in Sweden and continuing rehabilitation before she can be cleared to travel and reunite with Dahlin in Buffalo.
At 25, Dahlin is in his eighth NHL season after being drafted first overall by Buffalo in 2018. He has surpassed 50 points in each of the past four seasons and has been selected to represent Sweden at the upcoming 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics. So far this season, he has nine points in 14 games.
“I think it’s been incredibly hard. I fully understand what this young man is going through. You can’t truly describe or feel what he’s feeling,” Ruff added.
Rasmus Dahlin temporarily leaves the Buffalo Sabres to support his recovering fiancée in Sweden, receiving full backing from his team amid personal challenges.
