Rasmus Dahlin Taking Leave Of Absence

Rasmus Dahlin Takes Leave of Absence

Buffalo Sabres captain and star defenseman Rasmus Dahlin is taking a leave of absence from the team, head coach Lindy Ruff announced. No timeline has been set for his return.

According to The Athletic’s Matthew Fairburn, Dahlin is returning to Sweden to be with his fiancée, Carolina Matovac. In September, Dahlin and Matovac shared that she had undergone a heart transplant over the summer after a serious health scare during a trip in Europe.

“This has undoubtedly been the most challenging chapter of our lives,” Dahlin said, expressing gratitude toward those who supported them during the difficult period.

Buffalo News’ Mike Harrington reported that Ruff told the media, “things are going well” with Matovac. He emphasized the importance of letting Dahlin step away and noted, “he has got the support of everyone on this” as “this is bigger than hockey.”

Dahlin has been one of the Sabres’ key players since being the number-one overall pick in the 2018 draft. He serves as the team’s captain, top defenseman, and leading defensive scorer.

With Dahlin away, it is expected that teammates Bowen Byram and Owen Power will take on greater responsibility under Ruff’s guidance.

Author’s summary: Rasmus Dahlin is stepping away from the Buffalo Sabres to support his fiancée through recovery, emphasizing that some challenges transcend sports.
