Sabalenka Ends Gauff’s Title Hopes

Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula advanced to the semifinals of the WTA Finals in Riyadh on Thursday, each winning their matches in straight sets.

Top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka ended the title defense of Coco Gauff, defeating the American 7-6 (7/5), 6-2 in the final match of the round-robin stage at King Saud University Indoor Arena.

With a flawless 3-0 record, Sabalenka topped the Stefanie Graf Group, while Jessica Pegula claimed second place with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Italian eighth seed Jasmine Paolini.

Sabalenka now faces fourth seed Amanda Anisimova of the United States in a rematch of their US Open final, while Pegula meets Kazakhstan’s sixth seed Elena Rybakina in Friday’s semifinals.

“I’m super excited to face her in the semis,” said Sabalenka, who previously lost to Anisimova in the Wimbledon semifinals.

In their 12th career encounter, Sabalenka recovered from a one-break deficit twice to force a tiebreak against Gauff, securing her place in the next round.
