'Death by Lightning' Stars on Bringing Timely Tale of Garfield & Guiteau to TV

‘Death by Lightning’ Cast Discuss Bringing a Hidden History to TV

Matthew Macfadyen, Michael Shannon, and showrunner Mike Makowsky explore a little-known chapter of American history in the new Netflix limited series Death by Lightning. The story centers on President James Garfield, played by Shannon, and his assassin Charles Guiteau, portrayed by Macfadyen.

Adapting Candice Millard’s Book

The show is based on Candice Millard’s 2011 book Destiny of the Republic. Showrunner Mike Makowsky was drawn to the project by the quality of Millard’s storytelling.

“I have to confess I knew almost nothing about Garfield,” Makowsky said. “I was really just blown away by the quality of her writing and the story itself.”

He found the book by chance, sharing:

“I found [the book] at the buy-two-get-one-free table at my local Barnes and Noble, and I needed a third book and I picked it up… I ended up reading the book in one sitting.”

A Bingeable Historical Drama

The four episodes of the series offer a fast-paced, compelling look at this history, making it highly bingeable. It traces Garfield’s political rise, starting as a quiet supporter until a powerful speech secures his Republican nomination.

“It’s one of the most eloquent speeches in the history of American oratory, I feel. I didn’t really have to do much other than say it out loud,” said Shannon.

Ensemble Performance and Historical Insight

Makowsky assembled a strong cast to bring these historical figures to life, highlighting a critical but less familiar moment in America’s past, blending factual narrative with dramatic intensity.

Author’s summary: The series delivers a gripping portrayal of James Garfield’s presidency and assassination, revealing a forgotten piece of history through powerful performances and rich storytelling.
