Police in Stockport are investigating a fire set near the Marple war memorial just days before Remembrance Sunday. The incident occurred around 9:50 p.m. on Wednesday, November 5, when emergency services were called to reports of a group of males near the Cenotaph.
According to reports, a bin and wooden pallets were set alight, causing damage to the surrounding area. The act has provoked strong reaction across local social media and from community leaders.
"This is an absolutely disgraceful act and will not be tolerated," said Marple North councillor Steve Gribbon.
Police Sergeant Rachel Walton from the Stockport East Neighbourhood Policing Team described the event as reckless and dangerous.
“This was a reckless act that could have caused more damage or even serious injury. Police units arrived within minutes, and the fire was quickly extinguished by colleagues from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service. We are working with Stockport Council and the fire service to clean and restore the area.”
Officers from the Marple neighbourhood team are requesting any information from the public that may assist with the investigation.
The incident has stirred strong outrage within the community, with many expressing their dismay at the timing — so close to Remembrance Sunday.
