Philippine officials reported that the death toll from Typhoon Kalmaegi has reached at least 114, with 127 individuals still missing. Many affected are from a province already struggling to recover from a recent deadly earthquake.
The central province of Cebu experienced the most fatalities. Typhoon Kalmaegi struck the area on Tuesday, triggering flash floods and causing rivers and waterways to overflow.
Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV, deputy administrator of the Office of Civil Defense, said the flooding was severe in Cebu due to the storm.
Among the dead were six people who died when a Philippine Air Force helicopter crashed in the southern province of Agusan del Sur. The helicopter was en route to deliver humanitarian aid to provinces battered by Kalmaegi. The military did not disclose the cause of the crash.
Kalmaegi moved from western Palawan province into the South China Sea by Wednesday morning and was heading toward Vietnam.
