The 12-year-old Thai girl rescued from a human trafficking and sexual exploitation case in Tokyo is now under protective custody. Thai consular staff are working closely with Japanese authorities amid the ongoing criminal investigation.
The case came to light in mid-September 2025 after Tokyo police arrested a Japanese massage parlour owner. The arrest followed a complaint by the girl, who was reportedly forced into commercial sexual exploitation after being brought to Japan by her mother.
Nikorndej Balankura, Director-General of the Department of Information and spokesperson for the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), stated that the Royal Thai Embassy in Tokyo responded promptly upon notification from Japanese authorities. A consular officer visited the girl on 24 September 2025.
During the visit, a screening was conducted using the National Referral Mechanism (NRM), a framework for identifying trafficking victims, which confirmed strong signs that the girl is a trafficking victim.
"The young girl is now safely under the protection of the Japanese government."
Thai and Japanese officials continue to coordinate to ensure the child's safety and facilitate repatriation efforts.
