The upcoming film Rosemead, starring Lucy Liu, opens in theaters on December 5. PEOPLE has shared an exclusive trailer that gives a moving glimpse of Liu as Irene, a mother struggling after her teenage son is diagnosed with schizophrenia.
Directed by Eric Lin and written by Marilyn Fu, the film is inspired by a 2017 Los Angeles Times article by Frank Shyong. The true story centers on a Chinese American mother and son facing a devastating reality shaped by love, mental illness, and sacrifice.
Liu, 56, portrays Irene, an ailing woman who takes drastic measures to protect her son Joe, played by Lawrence Shou. The synopsis reads that Irene must confront impossible choices as her son's mental health declines and time runs out.
“As his dark obsessions grow and time runs out, she is forced to make impossible choices: how far will she go and what is she willing to sacrifice?”
Since its premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival, Liu has earned recognition for her powerful and emotionally charged performance that “audiences have never seen her in a role like this.”
“This isn't going to just go away like some cold. He needs to learn to live with it. You both do.”
The doctor’s words in the trailer highlight the film’s central theme: the painful resilience required to face a lifelong mental illness within the family.
Author’s Summary: Lucy Liu delivers a deeply emotional performance in Rosemead, bringing a real-life story of maternal love and loss to the screen with haunting realism and grace.
