Lucy Liu has embraced a fresh "lob" hairstyle, showcased in her upcoming drama Rosemead. The former Charlie's Angels star sports a short, side-parted cut falling just above her collarbone, seen for the first time in the film’s trailer.
Rosemead premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in June and will be released in theaters on December 5. The story centers on Irene (played by Liu) and her son Joe (Lawrence Shou), as they navigate life following Joe’s schizophrenia diagnosis.
The film is adapted from a 2017 Los Angeles Times article by Frank Shyong titled "A dying mother's plan: Buy a gun. Kill her son."
For Liu, this role signals a shift from her usual lighthearted, action-driven characters, such as those in Ally McBeal, Watching the Detectives, and Why Women Kill.
“As there was not a lot that was known about this family, the script had to be pieced together. In some ways, it’s a little bit of a thriller, because people know the final act and some of the details, and then the rest had to be kind of filled in, in order to understand the dynamic between Irene and her son.” — Lucy Liu, speaking to Variety
At the Tribeca Film Festival premiere, Liu also discussed her interest in this project and similar stories during an interview with Parade.
Summary: Lucy Liu shows a striking new look while taking on a deeply dramatic role in Rosemead, exploring the complex relationship between a mother and her son diagnosed with schizophrenia.
