Luka Doncic delivered a stellar performance in his return for the Los Angeles Lakers, leading the team to a 117–112 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night. He scored 44 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and handed out six assists in his first game back after three missed due to finger and leg injuries.
Despite being without LeBron James, who continues to recover from a sciatic nerve issue, the Lakers found renewed energy through Doncic’s leadership in their NBA Cup opener. Austin Reaves added 21 points, and Jake LaRavia contributed 13. Doncic extended his dominating streak against Memphis, marking his 11th consecutive game scoring at least 25 points versus the Grizzlies.
For Memphis, Jock Landale and Jaylen Wells each tallied 16 points, while Jaren Jackson Jr. also made key contributions. However, Ja Morant had a difficult night, managing only eight points on 3-of-14 shooting, though he did provide seven assists.
The Grizzlies appeared to seize momentum in the second quarter with a powerful 27–4 run, notching 42 points in the period to take a 69–55 halftime lead. Yet the Lakers regrouped in the third quarter, fueled by Doncic’s 16-point surge, erasing the deficit and setting up a fierce final stretch.
The matchup featured 14 lead changes and seven ties before the Lakers finally edged ahead in the fourth quarter to seal the win. The result gave Los Angeles a promising start to their NBA Cup campaign.
“Doncic’s return gave them a big boost in their opening NBA Cup match.”
The Lakers now prepare to host the Miami Heat this Sunday.
Doncic’s 44-point comeback sparked a resilient Lakers rally, overcoming Memphis’s early control to claim a 117–112 victory in their NBA Cup opener.
