Canada Post Begins Layoffs Amid Mediation with CUPW

On October 30, 2025, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) negotiators met with Canada Post and federal mediators for the first time since October 3. The goal was to revive negotiations and explore ways to move talks forward. Further discussions between the parties are expected in the coming days, according to a CUPW news release.

Ongoing Union Actions

While mediation continues, CUPW members maintain their rotating strikes. In Quebec, union members have intensified their measures by refusing to process and deliver unaddressed flyers, known as Neighbourhood Mail.

“We all have a part to play in our fight for public services, good jobs and a sustainable public post office. The negotiators thank all members for their continued support,” said Jan Simpson, CUPW National President.

Government's Position on Job Cuts

Joël Lightbound, the Minister of Government Transformation, Public Works and Procurement, who oversees Canada Post, has indicated readiness to approve significant layoffs. Experts estimate that up to 10,000 jobs could be cut as part of restructuring at the Crown Corporation.

This week, the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates heard testimony from Minister Lightbound regarding the ongoing changes.

Summary

Canada Post is moving forward with layoffs while continuing mediation with CUPW, as the union persists with strike actions to defend public postal services and jobs amid government-backed restructuring.
