This is the way it is: How Ita is coping with a life-changing condition

At 83 years old, Ita faced a major life change after back surgery in 2021, which led to the diagnosis of isolated gait disorder. Despite the uncertainty, she maintains a positive outlook and emphasizes the importance of staying active.

"I haven't walked properly since the back surgery."

Doctors remain unsure whether the surgery caused her condition or if it will worsen, but Ita now relies on a wheelchair. She acknowledges the challenge of adapting to this new dependency.

"I'm dependent on other people to help me get around and that's one of the adjustments."

Instead of focusing on what she’s lost, Ita chooses to appreciate the benefits, like the absence of back pain.

"I can either feel sorry for myself and do nothing, or I can take control of my life, as I always have."

She admits feeling frustrated about the limited research funding for her illness.

"Life is full of detours."

Ita has recently completed her twelfth book, Unapologetically Ita, her second memoir and the first one written without the pressure of a full-time job.

"It was a relief to write a book and discover how much fun it is when you don't have to keep leaving it to go back to the job you do."

Her story highlights resilience and the choice to embrace life positively despite significant challenges.

Author’s summary: Ita’s story is a powerful example of maintaining optimism and purpose while adapting to profound physical changes and uncertainty.
