The new limited series dramatizes the brief presidency of the 20th commander in chief, James A. Garfield, who was fatally shot by Charles J. Guiteau, a lawyer convinced he had secured Garfield's election.
Before the 1880 presidential election, 39-year-old lawyer Charles J. Guiteau distributed printed copies of a speech endorsing the expected Republican nominee. Initially, the speech supported former President Ulysses S. Grant, who sought a third term but lacked sufficient support.
When grant failed to secure the nomination, Guiteau replaced Grant’s name with Garfield’s, recently elected to the Senate from Ohio, believing his words could win the election for either candidate.
Garfield narrowly defeated Democratic General Winfield Scott Hancock in the presidential race. Guiteau then expected a reward for his efforts: an important diplomatic post abroad.
He formally applied for the Austrian Mission, claiming his political services gave him the right to the appointment:
“I hereby make a formal application for the Austrian Mission. I feel I have a right to do it on account of my services during the canvass.”
However, the appointment never materialized, largely because Garfield and his ally James G. Blaine were unaware of who Guiteau really was.
This series reveals the tragic consequences of misguided ambition and the unforeseen impact of a forgotten supporter.
