The Tragic True Story Behind 'Death by Lightning'

The series, starring Michael Shannon and Matthew Macfadyen, dramatizes the assassination of President James Garfield. It traces events from the contentious 1880 Republican National Convention to Garfield's short presidency and eventual death.

Garfield’s Rise to Presidency

During the 1880 Republican National Convention in Chicago, Ohio congressman and farmer James Garfield was chosen as a compromise candidate after 36 ballots. U.S. Senator John Sherman initially supported Garfield for his strong oratory skills, but delegates were divided among Sherman, Maine’s Senator James Blaine, and former President Ulysses S. Grant. Garfield’s inspiring speech secured his nomination.

“They chose to nominate Garfield instead because his speech was so inspiring.”

Garfield was inaugurated as the 20th President of the United States on March 4, 1881, with Chester Arthur as Vice President.

Charles Guiteau’s Obsession and Tragic Acts

Charles Guiteau, portrayed by Matthew Macfadyen, became obsessed with Garfield after his 1880 speech. The series follows Guiteau’s futile attempts to secure a government job, which led to his bitterness and eventual assassination of the president.

“Guiteau went from adoring Garfield to killing him.”

Garfield was shot on July 2, 1881, just four months into his term, and died from his wounds a few months later at age 49.
