Super Typhoon Uwan strengthened early Sunday morning, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). The agency raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 5 over the Polillo Islands, as well as parts of Camarines Norte and Catanduanes, warning of severe and life-threatening weather conditions.
PAGASA reported that Uwan now carries maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching up to 230 kph. The storm’s center was last observed about 125 kilometers east-northeast of Virac, Catanduanes, moving west-northwest at 25 kph.
The weather bureau emphasized that areas under Signal No. 5 should brace for violent winds and potentially catastrophic damage within the next twelve hours.
“Extreme life-threatening conditions are expected due to typhoon-force winds of 185 kph or higher within the next twelve hours,” PAGASA stated.
Authorities continue to urge residents to heed evacuation orders and stay updated through official weather advisories, as the most critical period is forecast from Sunday to Monday morning.
