Miss Piggy, evolving from a chorus pig to a feminist icon, is set to headline her own Disney film. Golden Globe-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence revealed she is co-producing the project alongside Oscar-winner Emma Stone.
Jennifer Lawrence announced the collaboration during an interview on the Las Culturistas Podcast:
“I don’t know if I can announce this, but I’m just gonna. Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie.”
The script is being penned by Cole Escola, known for the award-winning Broadway comedy Oh, Mary!
When asked whether she and Stone would act in the film, Lawrence responded:
“I think so… it’s [expletive] up they haven’t been in a movie together already.”
Lawrence shared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon that the idea was born during the pandemic lockdown amid the rise of cancel culture:
“She said, ‘Miss Piggy is a feminist icon. It would be so funny if Miss Piggy got canceled.’ Now that is not the plot necessarily, but it got the wheels turning.”
Miss Piggy debuted as a chorus pig on The Muppet Show in the mid-1970s, growing into a leading role in the late 1970s and early 1980s. She is famously recognized for her tumultuous relationship with Kermit the Frog, the show's main character.
The Miss Piggy movie, co-produced by Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone, will explore the character’s status as a feminist icon with a script by Cole Escola, inspired by timely cultural themes.
