We spoke with Game Director Dave Guskin about the future of Riot Games' new League of Legends trading card game (TCG), Riftbound. Although many details remain uncertain, Riot already has ambitious plans for the game's development over the next several years.
Riftbound recently launched its first set, Origins, but the design team has mapped out concepts for many more expansions well into the future. Guskin revealed that the team sketched an arc for roughly five years of content:
“I think we got up to, like, 2030. So about 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 sets.”
However, he emphasized that these ideas vary widely in development, and that long-term plans are tentative:
“Those are like the very sketches of ideas of sets. The further out in the future it is, the less confident I am that it’s actually going to be that.”
Currently, Riot is still exploring what a Riftbound set should look like as the game finds its footing in the competitive TCG genre. Guskin expressed caution about relying on traditional TCG norms:
“We’re a totally new game, and I don’t know that I can say that what’s worked for other TCGs will work for us.”
Riftbound’s development reflects Riot's careful, evolving approach, combining a bold long-term roadmap with ongoing experimentation to find its unique place in the trading card game market.
