Typhoon Fung-wong Weakens in the Philippines, Four Dead

Super Typhoon Fung-wong has weakened after hitting the Philippines, leaving four people dead. Authorities report that the storm, one of the most powerful this year, caused less damage than feared, with no major destruction reported so far.

Over a million people were evacuated before Fung-wong struck Luzon, the country’s most populous island, bringing fierce winds, heavy rain, and storm surges. Residents described a sleepless night due to the relentless wind and falling debris.

"We could not sleep because of the winds hitting our metal sheets and tree branches falling," said Romeo Mariano, who sheltered with his grandmother in Isabela province. "When we got out to check our home, we saw the damage."

Early assessments indicate the death toll "will be minimal," according to civil defence senior official Raffy Alejandro. Two children were killed in a mudslide in Kayapa, Nueva Vizcaya, while two others died from drowning and falling debris. Landslides also cut off at least four towns in Aurora province, where the typhoon made landfall.

"They followed two deaths from drowning and fallen debris," said regional civil defence official Alvin Ayson.

Landslides isolated several towns in Aurora, complicating rescue and assessment efforts.

Author’s summary: Typhoon Fung-wong caused limited damage and four deaths in the Philippines, with authorities noting a lower toll than expected despite its strength.
