Pompeo to Kathimerini: "Cyprus must stand firm with the West"

During an extensive interview, former U.S. Secretary of State and current Executive Chairman of Impact, Mike Pompeo, discussed Western unity, the shifting geopolitical balance in Ukraine and the Middle East, challenges from China, and Cyprus’ role in a complex global order.

Speaking in Nicosia at the annual Economist Conference, Pompeo emphasized that smaller nations such as Cyprus should navigate between major powers with caution, remain aligned with reliable allies, and enhance their security and economic stability.

“Small countries like Cyprus must carefully navigate between competing powers, align with trusted partners, and strengthen their security and economic resilience.”

He noted that Washington is increasingly focused on the Eastern Mediterranean, with particular interest in energy, defense, and regional cooperation.

U.S. Policy under the New Administration

When asked about key changes in U.S. foreign and trade policy under President Trump, Pompeo pointed out the strong continuity between the current and previous Trump administrations. He stated that the renewed focus is on deterring adversaries and correcting what he described as the failures of prior administrations.

“President Trump is working hard to restore the deterrence that was lost under Joe Biden, just as we did after the failed foreign policy of the Obama years.”

Pompeo highlighted that recent developments in the Middle East continue in the same strategic direction, citing the maximum pressure campaign against Iran and the elimination of Quds Force Commander Qasem Soleimani as measures that weakened Tehran’s influence.

Author’s Summary: Mike Pompeo underscored that Cyprus should uphold its Western orientation and that U.S. policy under President Trump continues to reinforce deterrence and regional stability.
