Franklin & Marshall College suspended all classes on Monday following a major power outage caused by a transformer malfunction over the weekend. The issue occurred early Saturday morning on Harrisburg Pike, disrupting power across much of the campus and nearby neighborhoods.
According to a college spokesperson, all residence halls except Roschel College House operated on emergency generators throughout the weekend. Students from Roschel were temporarily relocated and provided with alternative housing on Saturday and Sunday nights.
Several campus buildings, including Shadek-Fackenthal Library and Martin Library, remained closed through Sunday while repair teams worked to restore electrical service. The college’s director of media relations, Peter Durantine, said crews initially anticipated repairs would be complete by Sunday evening, but the process took longer than foreseen, leading to the cancellation of Monday classes and campus events.
“We apologize for the continued disruption and the inconvenience this has caused. Please know that our teams are working around the clock, along with PPL Electric, to complete repairs and restore normal operations as soon as possible,”
Durantine noted that restoration work would continue into Monday, and faculty and staff were instructed to work remotely wherever possible.
The college canceled Monday classes after a transformer failure cut power to most of campus, forcing temporary housing relocations and ongoing repair efforts.
