It Took T.J. Watt Nine Years To Meet A Pittsburgh Steelers Legend

The Pittsburgh Steelers' dominant defensive display against the Indianapolis Colts surely made Dick LeBeau proud. This game also marked the first meeting between T.J. Watt and LeBeau.

LeBeau returned to Pittsburgh to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 2005 Super Bowl XL championship team, providing the opportunity for the two to finally introduce themselves.

“It took nine years, but I’m glad. I mean, obviously he’s a busy guy, but to be able to meet the legend himself was very surreal.” — T.J. Watt in an interview with WMBS’ George Von Benko

LeBeau was among several Steelers honored during halftime at the Week 10 game, alongside notable players such as quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, running back Jerome Bettis, and defensive lineman Aaron Smith.

Although LeBeau and Watt never overlapped as coach and player—LeBeau’s last year in Pittsburgh was 2014, while Watt entered the NFL in 2017—they share a unique connection to the team’s legacy.

In 2017, LeBeau was Tennessee Titans' defensive coordinator, and Pittsburgh defeated Tennessee 40-17, with Watt recording two tackles. Despite this, the two did not meet after the game.

“Anytime those guys come back, it’s awesome. And to be able to be recognized for their Super Bowl is awesome. To just see all those guys back in town and see how tight-knit they are.” — T.J. Watt

Summary

T.J. Watt finally met Steelers legend Dick LeBeau after nine years, highlighting the deep respect and strong bonds among former and current team members celebrating their shared history.
