On Remembrance Sunday, residents of Wirral will come together to honour those who lost their lives in service. The borough will pause for silence as people gather at memorial events across the area on Sunday, 9 November.
The Mayor of Wirral, Councillor Brian Kenny, will preside over the Civic Service beginning at 10:55 a.m. at the Cenotaph in Hamilton Square, Birkenhead. At 11 a.m., attendees will observe a two-minute silence before the traditional Service of Remembrance.
The service will be led by Reverend Paul Bentley, Vicar of Birkenhead Priory Parish and Rural Dean of Birkenhead. Additional readings and blessings will be delivered by The Right Reverend Julie Conalty, Bishop of Birkenhead, and Reverend Debbie Wilkinson, Wirral Waters Mission Lead.
“The Mayor will lay a wreath at the Cenotaph on behalf of the people of Wirral, alongside Deputy Lieutenant Sue Higginson OBE DL, who will do so on behalf of His Majesty The King.”
The ceremony will also feature representatives from Wirral Council, the armed forces, various community organisations, and families of those who served in recent conflicts.
After the service, the Mayor and Deputy Lieutenant will take the salute during a march past led by the 107 Field Squadron, Royal Engineers. Once the parade has departed Hamilton Square, members of the public will be welcome to lay their own floral tributes at the Cenotaph.
