The McDonald's branch on Newmarket Road in Cambridge has applied to extend its opening hours, aiming to open from 6am to 11pm every day. Currently, it operates from 7am to 11pm seven days a week.
Despite two previous refusals, the fast food restaurant’s operator, represented by Savills, is pursuing approval to start an hour earlier in the morning. If granted, this change would add an extra hour to the restaurant’s daily schedule.
In a cover letter, Savills emphasized that the proposed extension “is not considered to result in any unacceptable impact” on nearby residents. They noted that businesses in the area have diverse operating hours, citing:
“For example, Papa Johns is open until 3am each day of the week.”
The letter further explained:
“This application simply seeks to extend the trading hours by an additional hour from that which is currently approved. We therefore anticipate that the proposal is entirely acceptable in terms of the extra hour of operation in the early morning trading period as no complaints have been received.”
Savills also noted that the majority of McDonald's customers arrive during the early morning hours, suggesting economic advantages tied to the extended opening time.
The McDonald's on Newmarket Road aims to open earlier to meet customer demand and boost economic activity, with assurances that the change will have minimal impact on the local community.
