Lake Tahoe issued water advisory over potential fecal contamination

Lake Tahoe Issues Water Advisory Over Potential Fecal Contamination

Earlier this week, residents of Incline Village, a scenic community in Lake Tahoe known for its affluent residents, were advised to boil their tap water after concerns arose about possible fecal contamination. The advisory affected the Nevada side of the lake.

“Incline Village water system experienced an event that resulted in loss of pressure in the distribution system, which may cause backpressure or movement of water from outside the pipe to the inside through cracks, breaks, or joints in the distribution system. Such a system failure carries a high potential that fecal contamination or other disease-causing organisms could enter the distribution system.”

Officials explained that the alert stemmed from a water leak discovered last month, raising fears that contaminated water might have infiltrated the local supply. Immediate emergency repairs were launched, and several homes temporarily lost water service during the maintenance work.

According to health authorities, untreated water entering the distribution lines could carry fecal matter containing harmful bacteria such as E. coli. Infection from these pathogens can lead to symptoms including diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and cramping. In severe cases, E. coli infections may progress to sepsis, a potentially life-threatening condition.
