Democrat Corey O’Connor wins Pittsburgh mayor’s race, defeats Republican Tony Moreno

Democrat Corey O’Connor Wins Pittsburgh Mayoral Race

Corey O’Connor, a Democrat and the son of former Pittsburgh Mayor Bob O’Connor, has been elected as the city’s 62nd mayor. Before his victory, O’Connor served for ten years on the City Council and later as Allegheny County Controller.

He faced Republican candidate Tony Moreno, a retired city police officer who also ran for mayor in 2021. The race continued Pittsburgh’s long Democratic legacy, as the city has not elected a Republican mayor since O’Connor’s grandfather’s era.

The Associated Press called the election for O’Connor at 8:26 p.m. Tuesday. By 9 p.m., applause swept through his election-night gathering at the IBEW Local #5 hall on the South Side after the announcement of his victory.

“We have a special announcement. Corey O'Connor has won.”

Minutes later, O’Connor spoke to supporters, expressing gratitude and emotion at the result.

“I’m humbled and honored by the great privilege of serving as Pittsburgh’s next mayor.”

During his remarks, he also paid tribute to his late parents, Bob and Judy O’Connor.

“I’m sure Mom and Dad are happy somewhere tonight.”

O’Connor later acknowledged that reflecting on following his father’s path was difficult on such a momentous evening.

“It’s hard for me to talk about following my father into office tonight.”
