Howell Public Schools were closed on Monday, November 10, after a threat of violence was posted on social media, according to a letter from Superintendent Erin J. MacGregor to families.
The threat targeted Howell High School and was initially reported as originating on Snapchat. However, Howell Police later clarified it was made on TikTok.
Law enforcement, including the School Resource Officer and an FBI agent from the Detroit/Ann Arbor office, traced the threat back to a residence in Marion Township. The individual responsible was interviewed and claimed the threat was a joke without intentions to cause harm.
"Law enforcement needs additional time to thoroughly investigate this matter," the superintendent's letter stated, explaining the closure was a precautionary measure.
The coordinated investigation involved local police and the FBI to ensure thoroughness. The cooperation highlighted the importance placed on student and community safety.
The school closure was a precaution after a social media threat traced to a local juvenile, with no weapons found and criminal charges under review.
