A woman and a child lost their lives after falling into a waterway in southeast Melbourne.
The mother and child drowned at Dandenong Creek, near Allan Street in Dandenong, around 3:45 pm on Monday.
Police believe the woman struggled in the water while trying to save the child.
Emergency services arrived at the scene to find both unconscious. Despite efforts including CPR, neither could be revived and were declared dead at the location.
Neither the woman nor the child have been officially identified.
Authorities will prepare a report for the coroner to investigate the circumstances.
