Nathan McKeown reported that his Toyota Hilux, with Arnie—a 7-year-old German shepherd—inside, was taken from his Wynnum home on November 8. The 43-year-old appeared publicly, urging for the safe return of the family pet.
“I don't care about the ute,” he told ABC two days after Arnie's disappearance.
The vehicle was later found parked on Amelia Street in Fortitude Valley around 4 pm on November 17, with Arnie discovered dead inside. Queensland Police confirmed that no criminal offense of unlawful use of a motor vehicle had occurred.
Police alleged McKeown drove the vehicle with Arnie inside to Amelia Street shortly after 10:30 pm on November 7, then left on foot. The next morning, he reportedly told his partner the vehicle had been stolen, and she subsequently reported the theft to police.
On Wednesday evening, McKeown was charged with breaching the duty of care of an animal by failing to provide proper care, under the Animal Protection Act.
Summary: Nathan McKeown was charged for abandoning his dog after falsely reporting his vehicle stolen, leading to the dog's death inside the ute.
