CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (KTIV) — The West Lyon Wildcats secured their seventh state football championship after defeating Iowa City Regina 34–27 in an overtime thriller at the UNI-Dome on Thursday afternoon.
The game kicked off around 4 p.m., with West Lyon taking an early lead after scoring the only touchdown in the first quarter. Regina, however, quickly responded in the second quarter, putting up 17 points and blocking a kick on the Wildcats’ lone touchdown of the period.
By halftime, Regina led 17–13, setting the stage for a tense second half.

The third quarter brought modest scoring, with Regina adding a field goal to make it 20–13. In the fourth quarter, momentum shifted as the Wildcats tallied two touchdowns, matched by one from Regina, bringing the score to 27–27.
As the final seconds ticked down, the Wildcats attempted a field goal to end the game but Regina’s defense blocked the kick, forcing overtime. In extra time, West Lyon took the first possession and converted it into the decisive touchdown, sealing a 34–27 victory.
