Interview: Jafar Panahi on making ‘It Was Just an Accident’ after his yearslong ban on filmmaking from Iran

Jafar Panahi sits down with Golden Gate Xpress and opens up about his Palme d’Or winning film, “It Was Just an Accident.” Panahi has won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival and the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in the last 25 years, and just won the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival for “It Was Just an Accident.” At 65, Panahi is the fourth director in history to achieve this triple crown, but the Iranian director’s biggest hope is that the awards and attention allow him to make more films. During his decade-plus long ban on filmmaking, Panahi made and released five features and directed part of an anthology. During his many arrests by the Iranian government, Panahi batted around ideas for new films. After being released from prison in 2023, the edict that banned him from his medium was lifted. Now, allegedly free from persecution for chasing his craft, he still made his film in secret. “It Was Just an Accident” takes the shape of a taut thriller and slowly reveals its hand as an enthralling political and social drama that unfurls unmitigated ire at the brutality of the current Iranian regime while prodding at age old moral questions about the subjugator and subjugated and if the tools of the former negate any actions if used in the hands of the latter. As the film rolls out worldwide, Panahi sat down with Golden Gate Xpress to delve into the film and the circumstances of its production.
