Reactions to Columbus Day from Native American Day Participants
In South Dakota, it is still Native American Day, a declaration made by the governor's office over 30 years ago.
The recent change of the national holiday by President Trump has been met with frustration. Some Native Americans at the Native American Day Parade celebration are wondering if Trump could broker peace with Native Americans in the Midwest, just as he is doing in the Middle East.
"We're celebrating today regardless of what anybody is saying," said one organizer.
Organizers and attendees of Native American Day celebrations are reacting to the overturning of Native American Day nationwide and the reinstatement of Columbus Day.
"Very non-controversial, frankly, but some people would say it's controversial," said President Trump. "We're calling it Columbus Day. Yes."
