More hydrogen fuel cell buses are on the way as RGRTA lands state grant

Expansion of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Buses

New York state has awarded $17.5 million to the Rochester-Genesee Regional Transportation Authority (RGRTA) to purchase 10 new hydrogen fuel cell buses.

This funding, announced by Kathy Hochul, will also support updates to the operations building. The new buses are in addition to the 10 hydrogen fuel cell buses already on order, with delivery expected to start next month.

According to officials, hydrogen fuel cell buses offer better fueling time and range, particularly during winter months, compared to plug-in electric buses. Currently, RGRTA has two hydrogen buses and more plug-in electric buses in operation.

Kathy Hochul announced funding awards for several transit providers across the state, including $17.5 million for RGRTA.

Some of the funding for the previously ordered buses came from a federal grant announced last year. This new investment will further expand RGRTA's fleet of hydrogen fuel cell buses.
